What is Hypnotheraphy and how can it help me?
Hypnosis has seen a huge growth in popularity over recent years, thanks to the likes of Paul McKenna and Derren Brown and for good reason.
You may be very familiar with the stage version of Hypnosis, but Hypnotherapy (Hypnosis in its clinical form), really is one of the most powerful techniques for making positive changes, very quickly. The reason is that it overcomes our natural barriers (our conscious thought process) and enables us to get right into our subconscious mind and also the most powerful part of creative mind – our imagination.
Therefore, if you want to make a positive change in your life, for example become more confident or more motivated, perhaps learn to deal with stress in a better way or overcome a past trauma, emotional pain or even a phobia – then Hypnotherapy is a great tool to help you to do this quickly, effectively and permanently.
Will it work for me?
One of the most frequent questions that we are asked about Hypnotherapy is ‘Will hypnosis work for me”? The answer is, if you WANT it to work, then yes it will work for you. On the other hand if you do not really want to make the change or want the hypnosis treatment to work, then it will not work because your conscious mind will override it.
All that you need to do to benefit from Hypnosis is to be open to the possibility of change and be happy to let the hypnotherapist do their work. That’s it.
Try an audio
Of course, you don't necessarily need to see a hypnotherapist in order to enjoy the benefits of hypnosis, there are many audios available online that you can add to your MP3 and if used on a regular basis, they will have a positive effect on you.
My suggestion if you are to use an audio is to find one that suits you. Find one with a voice (and an accent) that does not seem too obvious to you. The hypnotherapist’s voice and accent should be soothing and easy to listen to. If you pick an audio with the voice of man with a very deep voice from America and you a female from the UK (or vice versa), you conscious mind may be so taken aback by their actual voice that you will not be able to relax enough to go into a trance state. In this case, the hypnosis will not work for you, so this is absolutely key if you are to have real success with an audio recording.
What is hypnosis?
The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states:
"In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist."
These suggestions help people make positive changes within themselves. But contary to popular belief it is actually you that is in control NOT the hypnotherapist. Stage Hypnotists have perhaps given us a warped version of how Hypnosis works, but all of the people that you see on stage barking like a dog or eating an onion as if it is an apple WANTED to be hypnotised. They may seem like they are under the control of the Hypnotist, but actually, they are not. Which is why you will never see a Stage Hypnotist pick out a reluctant member of the audience – you can stop yourself from the hypnotic suggestion.
Any Hypnotist that tells you that they could hypnotise anyone is either delusional or lying. A Hypnotist or Hypnotherapist can only Hypnotise a willing participant. Therefore, it is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis. But this is what makes Hypnotherapy so effective, it is all about self empowerment.
The following four extracts from Dr Hilary Jones' book, "Doctor, What's the Alternative?", provide an accurate and accessible wonderful description of what hypnotherapy is, how it works and how hypnotherapy can help you change and grow.
Definition of hypnotherapy
Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep. It does involve the induction of a trance-like condition, but when in it, the patient is actually in an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating entirely on the hypnotist's voice. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind is revealed.
The therapist is able to suggest ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations to the patient, the seeds of which become firmly planted.
The aim of Hypnotherapy is to re-programme patterns of behaviour within the mind, enabling irrational fears, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome. Usually your conscious mind puts up barriers to anything that tries to get into your subconscious, but hypnosis puts you into a deep state of relaxation known as a trance state (NOT the same as sleeping) and at this stage you become more aware in the subconscious part of your brain.
Benefits of a 1-2-1 Hypnotherapy Session;
The benefits of hypnotherapy are far too wide to list here, but these are the most common reasons why clients seek a Hypnotherapy treatment;
- Negative Thoughts or Emotions
- Control Anger
- Grief
- Fears and Phobias
- Stress
- Divorce or Relationship Problems
- Unwanted habits such as smoking, overeating or drug/drink addictions
What does it feel like to be Hypnotised?
The effects can differ from person to person, but usually it feels like you are in a dream state, but you are awake and aware of what is going on around you. It is a very pleasant and relaxing experience.
How many sessions will I need?
Everyone is different, but for the vast majority of issues it will take between 1-4 sessions, with 4 being quite unusual. If you make the decision that you want change and you want it now, you will get quicker results than if you are reluctant or anxious.
How can I book a session?
If you know that you definitely want to go ahead with a session, you can use the online booking form.
If however, you would like to have a free 1/2 hour consultation to discuss your issue and see if Hypnotherapy is the right option for you, please book a time using this online diary to book a timeslot.
