Before we get into the description of visualisations, I just wanted to overcome one of your possible limiting beliefs.

Just accept this as a fact; it wasn't just Einstein that was a genius – we ALL have brilliant minds.  This has nothing to do with your IQ or whether you have a masters degree, this is about the MIND not just the brain.

We seem to be able to accept that the human mind is powerful, even though we only know a small portion of what it actually capable of.  But most of the time, we totally underestimate the power of our own minds.  We're happy to believe that 'The mind is powerful' but are you willing to accept that YOUR mind is powerful?

If not, why not?

You may want to do some work on that thought if you are telling yourself 'no'.

Check out the posts on limiting beliefs and slowly work through each one that comes up for you.

So back to Visualisations….

What are visualisations?

and isn't it just 'daydreaming'?     Yes!  Visualisations are daydreaming, as children we are still very in touch with the creative side of our brains until our elders tell us to 'concentrate' or 'stop daydreaming' and we start to think of visualising our dreams as a bad thing.

In terms of using visualisations as a technique to help you achieve your goals; Visualisations are the pictures that we paint in our minds eye, by using our imagination to show us in our lives AFTER we have achieved a goal, however big or small.

When our mind 'sees' a vision, especially more than once, we can trick it into thinking that the vision is a reality or a memory.  This part of the brain cannot differentiate between past, present and future, so we can fool our own mind into thinking that the lifestyle that we want is firstly a possibility (very important to have BELIEF when we are trying to achieve a goal) and then, after a period of time, a reality.

Once we know that our goal is actually achievable, we feel much more confident about achieving it.  Let's be honest here, if a goal seems impossible – how many of us would actually take action and try to achieve it?   But sometimes, even the smallest goals can start to seem 'impossible' because we have so many deeply engrained limiting beliefs (I can't do it, I am not good enough, I always fail).  You may not say these things out loud, but if you are thinking them, they are holding you back.

Visualisations are a way of overcoming those limiting beliefs.

When we have overcome the 'it's an impossible goal' belief, we can then start to really hone in on the visualisation to make our minds believe that what we are seeing is a REALITY.

Getting the feel good factor from doing this will give you the motivation that you need to carry on the path to achieving your goal, it will make you WANT to go towards the goal and not away from it.

This again, is a key factor in achieving ANY goal, however big or small, because it is often the easier path to do nothing. But feeling those positive emotions that a visualisation will trigger, will really spur you on because we all want to feel good and when we train ourselves to know this vision makes us feel GREAT, we are motivated to do what we need to do to achieve it.

How do you 'visualise'?

Start by closing your eyes and imagining yourself AFTER you have achieved a certain goal, even if the 'goal' is only a small goal such as 'having the perfect day at work' or 'reaching my weekly weight loss target'.

If you cannot picture yourself in the first person, you could try watching yourself on a large TV or cinema, but if you do it this way, you need to make it really powerful, so turn up the sounds and the colour and make it really vivid.

I usually start my visualisations by asking myself some simple questions;

Picture how you feel in this vision (do you look happy or animated?)
Try to feel the emotions that you are feeling in your vision (do you feel loved, are you content, are you excited etc?).

Notice your surroundings, are they familiar or new? Where are you?  Who is with you and what are they doing?

Just keep going with the questions until you start to FEEL the vision become a reality in your emotional energy.  When you feel that you are happy in the vision or when you feel that you are excited, this is when you have hit the right spot.

Next time… Some beginners tips for using visualisations.
